“some other bands, like broadway sounds, are better served by being assigned a large area with nebulous borders on the infinite plane of musical variation. their territory would include the principality of r n b with colonial protectorates in boogie, soul, disco, afrobeat and calypso. they are like the early nineteenth century british empire of new melbourne bands” – three thousand
broadway sounds is a psychedelic pop band created by singer/ songwriter/ producer/ multi instrumentalist/ DJ Andrew Diamond Phillips. They have been playing around melbourne for the past 18 months, alongside no zu, client liasion, kirkis, andras fox, dd dumbo, gl, harvey sutherland, silent jay, the black jesus experience; and internationals such as awesome tapes from africa (twice), tako & invisible city dj's. they have also played alongside local dj's such as edd fisher, andee frost, chris gill and lewis cancut. they have also been involved with various red bull music academy events.
the sound ranges from boogie funk to folk-soul to township jive to kwela jazz to afro rock to rnb to soca and almost anything in between. after releasing their "wildflowers" ep two years ago, in 2014 they released a new ep "the last detail" featuring three wildly different songs that go from calabash rock to boogie funk to psych folk.
both ep's were mixed and co-produced by aaron shanahan (miami horror). the new ep has been given regular rotation australia wide. the “booby trap” video clip received rage’s “indie clip of the week” and the video for “something sensual” was also well received.
a new song and video is due in late november 2014 and also in january 2015.
“purveyors of outernational psychedelia, broadway sounds are a melbourne band that will shake your bones and make you sweat like a storm. meeting at the intersection of afro rock, boogie funk, township jive, afro funk, kwela jazz, soca, rnb, folk and soul, they are a new breed of psych pop that push it and make it work.”
